NEW YORK MILLS, Minn.– The New York Mills Regional Cultural Center’s performing arts series continues with “The Night Before Gettysburg,” a theater performance by Chuck Johnson, at the Cultural Center on Wednesday, March 6th at 6:00 p.m. Performance is free to attend and open to all.
“The Night Before Gettysburg” is a solo performance that focuses on Lincoln finishing writing The Gettysburg Address the night before in his bedroom. Writer and actor Chuck Johnson uses the play to take you inside Lincoln as he struggles with racism, slavery, war carnage, and the deaths of two of his children. It’s a very powerful performance. Don’t miss this unique piece of living history!
Chuck Johnson from Perham wrote “The Night Before Gettysburg” in 2021, to compete in a 1-act play contest in Wadena. The play won the competition, and Destination Gettysburg tracked him down a few days later, to inquire about performing in Gettysburg (after finding out about the play via keyword search!).
Johnson did ten Gettysburg performances in 2022, six in 2023, and has more scheduled for 2024. This is his second performance in New York Mills; he performed at the New York Mills Public School for students in grades 5-12 on February 16, 2024. We would like to thank Chuck for sharing his time and talents with us!
All are welcome at this living history performing arts event (best for 5th graders and up). There is no cost to attend. Performance begins at 6:00, lasts approximately 35 minutes, and includes a deeper look at some of the historical happenings, concluding with an open Q&A session.
