Fatal Two-Vehicle Crash on U.S. Highway 71 Near Park Rapids

Park Rapids, Minn (KWAD) – A two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 71 near Park Rapids resulted in one fatality on Sunday morning, September 29th, according to the Minnesota State Patrol (MSP).

The accident occurred at approximately 11:35 AM when a 2014 Ford F150, driven by 64-year-old Steven K. Rodke of Hawley, was traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 71. His passenger, identified as 75-year-old Mickie K. Rodke, was also in the vehicle.

According to the MSP report, a 2016 Ford Focus driven by Thomas T. Kolden, 72, of Wadena, pulled out from State Highway 87 in front of the F150. The two vehicles collided, causing both to veer off the road into the western ditch.

Thomas Kolden was pronounced dead at the scene. The Rodkes were transported to CHI St. Joseph’s Health with non-life-threatening injuries.

Emergency responders from North Memorial Ambulance, Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office, Park Rapids Police Department, and Hubbard First Response were on the scene assisting with the crash.

The Minnesota State Patrol continues to investigate the incident.
