Osakis Township, Minn (KWAD) – A water rescue unfolded early Saturday morning on Bird Lake when a duck hunting trip took a dangerous turn. At 6:08 AM on September 28, 2024, Jessica Brewer, 35, called 911 to report that her boat, carrying two adults and two juvenile children, had capsized during the outing. All four individuals managed to hold on to the overturned boat while awaiting rescue.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded swiftly, dispatching a Water Patrol boat and Dive Team Airboat to the scene. As the rescue teams were en route, reports indicated that the group was struggling to stay afloat due to their waders filling with water.
Deputies arrived just in time to rescue all four hunters, including Brewer and Travis Hendrickson, 39, from the frigid waters. The group was treated on-site for hypothermia but fortunately, no serious injuries were reported.
A concerning detail noted by responders was the absence of life jackets. None of the hunters were wearing them, and there were not enough life jackets available for all occupants on board.
In light of the incident, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office emphasized the importance of wearing life jackets during water-based activities. They reminded the public that life jackets should be worn or at least easily accessible, and that each person on board should have one, especially children. Waterfowl hunting, like many outdoor activities, carries risks, and drowning is one of the leading causes of death for hunters.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office was supported in the rescue by the Alexandria Police Department, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officers, Osakis First Responders, and North Ambulance.
