State Tournament Recap: Alexandria Area Wins AAA Title, Nevis 4th, Henning 5th In A

TWIN CITIES, Minn.– History was made at Williams Arena this afternoon.

For the first time in school history, the Alexandria Area Cardinals are champions of Class AAA in Boys Basketball!

Alexandria Area tops Mankato East 73-64 to claim the 2024-25 State Boys Basketball title. Chase Thompson finished with 28 points in his final game for the Cardinals. Mason Witt and Talan Witt (13 points) both finished the game with double-digit point performances.

The Cardinals rode the success that got them here: ferocious defense that turns into points on the other end. Alexandria Area was able to draw nearly 20 of their 73 points in the championship game off of tunrovers.

“This for the City of Alexandria,” Thompson said in a post-game interview. “Thank you so much for the support. This was a team goal all along. To accomplish that goal and win, you’ve got to do so as a team.”

Thompson, a Clemson commit for basketball, also made the Class AAA All-Tournament Team. Joining him with that honor was Mason Witt and Talan Witt.

Nevis Tigers

Nevis came away with 4th place in the Class A State Tournament. The Tigers defeated Henning on Thursday afternoon from Target Center 58-52, then fell to Cherry 79-70 in the Semi-Final game. Saturday at Concordia-St. Paul, Nevis lost to Red Lake County 67-62.

AJ Bessler was named to the Class A All-Tournament Team.

Henning Hornets

The Henning Hornets finish top 5 in Class A for the second time in the last seven seasons. Henning made it back to the Class A State Tournament for the first time since the 2019 tourney where they won the championship. The Hornets fell to Nevis 58-52 from Target Center on Thursday and rebounded with a 61-59 victory at Gangelhoff Center at Concordia-St. Paul.

Coach Randy Misegades and company claimed 5th place with a 73-69 win vs. Heritage Christian Academy for a winning record in the state tournament at 2-1. Kale Misegades, enroute to a Class A All-Tournament Team nomination, finished with 30 points. Teigan Bjerke added 22 points in his final game for the Hornets.
