Hackensack, Minn (KWAD) – A freak accident at the Annual Hackensack Chainsaw Carving Event on Saturday left four people injured after an SUV rolled away from its parking spot, striking event-goers and a tent in downtown Hackensack.

According to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred at approximately 3:37 PM. Authorities received reports that a vehicle had struck several people during the popular event held at Hackensack City Park.

Investigators revealed that the driver, an 80-year-old man, was attempting to park his 2021 Honda Pilot when he exited the vehicle. As he stepped out, the SUV began to roll away from the parking spot. The man tried to re-enter the vehicle to stop it, but it continued forward, crashing into a tent and striking four adults.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene, where three adults were treated for minor injuries. They were later transported to area hospitals by private vehicles. However, one adult sustained a more serious injury and was airlifted by North Memorial Air Care to a Duluth hospital.

The driver of the SUV is cooperating fully with the ongoing police investigation. Authorities confirmed that alcohol was not a factor in the incident.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the accident.
